36 KMS members from Aceh Barat, Aceh Besar, Aceh Bierun, ABDYA,
Aceh Jaya, Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Tengah, Aceh Timur, Pidie Jaya
undertook a two day training at the weekend to learn how to make laundry soap and detergents.

The training was conducted at the Sekolah Menengah Teknik Industri (SMTI) in Banda Aceh. Four trainers imparted the KSM members the skills  to mix the basic ingredients to make the soaps, which they will attempt to produce as a collective enterprise in their respective groups.

As with most training sessions, the weekend was also an opportunity for KSM members to network, meet and exchange notes on their experiences—good cheer and laughter the main ingredients the bubbled through between the theory and practical sessions.

KSM members from Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Tengah and Aceh Timur are currently undertaking a three day training course in Banda Aceh to produce tempeh and tofu for commercial purposes in their villages.

Tempeh and tofu are the traditional Indonesian foods made from fermenting soya bean and soya bean milk. The training is being conducted by Mr Arman, a well established cottage industry operator in the city, who has successfully built a reputation, and the clientele to match, to support a viable business, employing local people and providing a fresh quality product for the local market—an ambition shared by the KSM members who have joined the training.

This training follows a similar initiative which has seen the development of new enterprises in Pidie Jaya and other districts. The training is part of the wider micro finance program implemented through the LOGICA2 initiative, which is part of the Australian Indonesia Partnership funded by AusAid.
